A PROCLAMATION OF THE TROPHY CLUB TOWN COUNCIL SUPPORTING
THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY AS BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN TROPHY CLUB.
Whereas, During Black History Month, we celebrate the many achievements
and contributions made by African Americans to our economic, cultural, spiritual,
and political development; and
Whereas, in 1915, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson, noted Black Scholar and
son of former slaves founded the Association for the Study of African American Life
and History (ASALH); and
Whereas, Dr. Woodson initiated Black History Week, February 12, 1926; and
for many years, the second week of February was chosen to coincide with the
birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln; and
Whereas, in 1976, as part of the nation's Bicentennial, Black History Week
was expanded and became Black History Month; and
Whereas, The ASALH has selected, "Black Resistance" as the Theme for
2023; and
Whereas, Maya Angelou, celebrated writer, performer, and social activist
became the First Black Woman featured on the 25-cent piece celebrating the
accomplishments of American Women; and
Whereas, we urge all citizens to celebrate our diverse heritage and culture
and continue our efforts to create a world that is more just, peaceful, and prosperous
for all; and
Whereas, The Town of Trophy Club is committed to kindness, diversity,
equity, inclusion, and mutual respect as a fundamental idea for a healthy, thriving
community.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mayor Alicia L. Fleury in conjunction with the town council,
hereby proclaim February as:
BLACK HISTORY AWARENESS MONTH
PASSED AND APPROVED by the Trophy Club To n Council, this 21st day of
January 2023.
